How to Avoid Burnout

For a lot of us who have been navigating COVID-19 and continued changes, burnout is common. Sometimes burnout is a temporary feeling that can happen at the end of the day after way too many meetings draining our social battery. Sometimes, however, it’s a more lingering feeling that accumulates after years of the same routines, lasting all day and night. It can have consequences well beyond how often we’re yawning at work ‒ it’s associated with higher chances of heart disease, hypertension, and other negative physical and mental health issues.

Whether it lasts a few days or months, burnout is a sapping state of mind you should try your best to prevent before it drains your potential. Once your passion wanes, you might feel detached from your work, which can impact your performance and affect your professional relationships. There are several reasons why burnout occurs, and each case is unique. Even so, there are some common steps you can take to mitigate it. Here’s what we’ve found that can help extinguish the flames of burnout:

  1. Get some exercise.

You might have heard that exercise can provide some mood-boosting effects that last throughout the day. While exercise alone can’t change what happens at work, the endorphins can better equip you to handle unexpected changes.

  1. Take a vacation.

Unplugging for just a few days or weeks before plugging back in can provide a much-needed rest and refresh. Maybe a few days alone in a foreign country or in the middle of the woods is the push you need for a company-shifting epiphany. Such an epiphany may lead you to make some updates to your business, adding some novelty to everyone’s day. Exposure to new sights, cultures, and sounds might inspire you to shift your perspectives, leading to a revamp of your organization that’ll take off some monotony and stress. Additionally, showing your team members that you value time off may help encourage them to use their PTO regularly too.

  1. If you work remotely, consider some digital nomading.

If you’re fortunate enough to work with little else but a laptop, traveling doesn’t need to end when your vacation does. If you can find accommodations with fast enough internet, consider traveling while working. Perhaps the same monotonous client meetings might feel a little differently if you’re doing it from Tahiti rather than your home office.

  1. Prioritize self-care.

All the above tips can fall under the category of self-care, which can encompass an array of other routines such as meditation, getting good amounts of sleep every night, and eating a healthy diet. All of this better equips you for handling repeated stressful moments at work and the consequent frustration of burnout. Self-care can help you build the mental fortitude to reject what and who doesn’t personally and professionally benefit you, respond to tough clients, and, overall, point you in the direction of putting your mental well-being first.
