We all know that networking is one of the most powerful things in today's professional world. It's not about collecting business cards or growing your LinkedIn following. Even though both of those things can be fun, it's about creating genuine connections that help you grow, learn, and authentically showcase your story to others. Many people think networking is simple — after all, it's just talking to another person. While that's partly true, there are ways to optimize your conversations to ensure they lead somewhere meaningful. It's not always clear how to take advantage of those opportunities after meeting someone, but don't worry! We've got the tips to help you build a network that feels genuine, successful and less transactional.
Here are a few tips on how to make the most of your networking opportunities and turn those interactions into valuable relationships.
1. Tap in your curiosity
Networking can feel difficult if you're not used to it, but one thing that can make it much easier is being genuinely curious about the person you're talking to. And by curious, we mean being truly interested. First things first, ensure that the conversation is balanced. It shouldn't just be about your business or your needs. Genuine relationships are built when both parties feel heard and valued. Ask questions that show you're interested in their experiences, challenges and successes. Don't be afraid to dig their brain! Ask the kind of questions that you're actually wondering about. This helps you connect on a deeper level and signals to the other person that you're invested and in the moment. This is also a great way to find out if you're compatible and if you might collaborate in the future.
Here are some questions to spark your next conversation:
Have you learned any lessons in your career that you think everyone should know?
What's the most unexpected skill you've had to develop?
What's a challenge in your industry that people aren't talking about enough?
Is there something you're particularly passionate about right now?
What's something you've done that you're really proud of, but that others might not know?
2. Remember personal details
This might seem insignificant, but remembering and bringing up personal details can make a gigantic difference in building a meaningful relationship. Think about it: the person you're talking to has had countless small talk conversations, especially if you're at a networking event. To stand out, you've got to break that pattern. Did they mention their weekend plans or favorite coffee spot? Bring it up later in the conversation or in a future one. It's these small details that show you're paying attention. Did they talk about going on vacation soon? Ask them how it went the next time you catch up! You'll build rapport and show that you care beyond just business etiquette. This approach also works in your favor when it comes to expanding your network. If they're enjoying the conversation, people often introduce you to others they know based on shared values or interests. It could be a never-ending cycle of influence, helping you get a better shot at success as you grow your network exponentially.
3. Allow yourself to be open
Earlier, we talked about keeping the conversation balanced. Being curious about the other person was half of it. The other half? It's all about you! It's just as important to open up about your own experiences and challenges. Don't be afraid to talk about your business goals, struggles or even aspects of your personal life. In fact, vulnerability is one of the most powerful things you have when it comes to building authentic connections. By being open, you're showing the other person that you trust them. We're all humans, and having this honest bond won't go unnoticed. As you share, be transparent about what you're working on and where you might need support. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to offer help when they know you're working toward something meaningful. If the other person is asking you questions back, you know they're interested in you as well. A healthy network is one where you can grow together. It's a give-and-take dynamic that can turn acquaintances into long-term allies.
4. Follow up on your conversation
So you've met someone interesting and had a great conversation; what's next? It's time to turn that brief encounter into a lasting connection. People are busy, and it's easy for conversations to fade once they fall back into their routine. Well, let's ensure they won't forget you! A simple, but thoughtful follow-up can make you stand out. For example, if you discussed something and you come across an article related to it, send them the link with a message like, "I came across this article and thought you might enjoy it!" Also, don't forget to connect on social media and engage with their posts. One important thing to keep in mind: don't force it. Keep your interactions light and natural. You don't have to be constantly checking in, but leaving a comment on a recent post or congratulating them on an achievement can make them feel appreciated. You might even get the same interactions back, boosting both of your professional or business engagements! Small gestures like these go a long way in building that relationship. We'd recommend making it a habit to check in with them every few months!
The true power of networking lies in authenticity and time. It's a long-term investment, but one that pays off when you connect with the right people. As you continue to meet more people, you'll begin to realize that these relationships can lead to unexpected opportunities, months or even years down the line. As small business owners and entrepreneurs, we know the journey can feel lonely at times. That's why it's so important to surround yourself with a group of people who genuinely care about each other's success and are willing to offer support. Invest in your network, be patient and trust that when your voice comes from the heart, you'll find success beyond what you could achieve alone!
After networking, consider offering mentorship if they could benefit from your guidance. Surprisingly, there's a lot that you can gain from being a mentor. Read here to learn more.
