Strategies for Overcoming Creativity Ruts

June 26, 2024 08:00 AM By Lisset

Marketing and creativity come hand in hand. Whether you're coming up with a new theme for your marketing campaign, writing insightful blogs or creating social media content, creativity plays a huge role in capturing attention and engaging with your audience. However, you may feel stuck from time to time. Sometimes, it even feels like the harder you try to think of new ideas, the further they slip away from you. With some proven strategies to keep your next creative ideas flowing, we're sure that you'll have your next great idea in no time.

Here are six strategies to get out of a creative block.

1. Keep a journal handy whenever an idea pops up

It's unlikely that you'll be creative 24/7. Most of the time, creativity comes and goes. That's why having a journal can be super helpful for logging any ideas you have on the go. If you don't want to carry a journal around, you can use your phone's note taking app to log ideas instead. The best ideas usually come to you when you're not even looking for them. Tip: Not a huge writer? Consider using a voice recorder and transcription app to capture your thoughts!

2. Mix up your environment

Shake things up by exploring a new environment when you're trying to come up with new ideas. If you've been sitting in a loud room, struggling to generate ideas, you can understand why it's challenging. So change up your environment by brainstorming at a park, library or cafe. Even stepping outside and connecting with nature can be a refreshing reset. We're sure that you'll find it incredibly beneficial to introduce some variety into your routine.

3. Spend time with people who inspire you

Do you have that one friend that always makes you laugh at the most random times? Or the one who effortlessly tells engaging stories about their everyday life? These are the kind of company that can be invaluable when you're feeling creatively stagnant. Being around these individuals may push you in the right direction to spark your own creativity.

4. Get inspired by others' creativity

Similar to the previous point, you can find inspiration in the creative works of others, such as books, artwork or even movies. When you immerse yourself in various forms of media, you expose yourself to a range of different perspectives. Just like diving into the mind of authors, artists or directors, you'll absorb elements of their creativity to use for your own.

5. Make creativity a part of your daily regimen

Creativity is a skill that can be learned and mastered. By incorporating an activity or two that stimulates your creative mind everyday, you're conditioning your brain to consistently engage in imaginative thinking. Some examples of activities can include painting, dancing, photography or even cooking. Embracing these creative pursuits not only teaches you new skills but also enriches your daily life. And don't forget, these hobbies are meant to be enjoyable experiences!

6. Take a pause

Sometimes, a plateau in creativity gets the best of us. So don't stress yourself out by overthinking things. Instead, take a break, go outside for a walk, move your body or take a short nap ‒ anything that helps you relieve stress will be beneficial. A pause might be exactly what you need to re-energize your mind after a day of staring at digital screens. Rest is essential for short and long-term creativity!

Everyone is different, but we're confident that at least one of these points can help get things moving for you. However, if these suggestions aren't effective, remember that feeling stuck is a natural part of the creative process. The more you dwell on it, the less likely you'll find what you're looking for. Stay patient and trust that breakthroughs will come. Who knows, you may just come up with your best marketing outreach yet!
