Ways to Show More Kindness at Work

Something that often happens around year-end is that people feel more inclined to be kinder, not wanting to dampen anyone’s spirits. Last year’s celebrations happened in more isolated times than usual, making the season a little harder to brighten up.

Fortunately, kind gestures – even if small and subtle – are always a spark for a little more cheer. If you need a little motivation to open up and show a bit more empathy, kindness has been proven to have a multitude of practical benefits from increasing dopamine to boosting productivity.

People who feel kindly treated at work later go on to become more generous.  A little kindness can go a long way, so why not start in the office? Here are some ways to show a little extra kindness at work:

Ask your employees what changes they’d like to make.

What goes on at a workplace shouldn’t only be in the hands of those at the top. You’re all in the organization together even if you’re the owner, so it’s only fair and kind to be considerate of what others are looking for and how they feel. For example, perhaps a few employees might want some of the kitchen snacks to be more conscious of healthier lifestyles. Even if their suggestion comes off as emotionally sensitive, such as improving how you deal with conflicts or mistakes or improving diversity, put your ego aside and listen to their sides.

There are plenty of people out there with bright ideas but don’t feel like they’re in a place to speak up. Asking for their input can help them feel heard and important on a professional and personal level, improving their morale, and their relationship with you. After all, your business can’t succeed without their help!

Ask your coworkers about their day or weekend.

If you’re in an appropriate position to do so, don’t hesitate to ask how your coworker’s day was or what they’ll be doing this weekend. Taking some interest in their personal lives sends the message that they’re also a multidimensional human being rather than just their job title.

Just say 'hi' and 'good morning' more often.

A cheery greeting when a coworker walks by you or first picks up the phone is a quick and easy way to make them feel more acknowledged and valued. On group Zoom calls, you can say 'hi' to everyone when you first sign on.

Bring snacks they’ll like.

If you and your coworkers are in the office, consider bringing some snacks and drinks to share. Before you jump to the typical shared stuff such as pizzas and donuts, why not ask your coworkers what they’d like to eat? Maybe it turns out that a few of your teammates are seriously energized and motivated by hummus and celery sticks.

Of course, don’t forget to practice good hygiene and aim for individually wrapped items!

Offer to help others with their work.

Have you noticed any employees consistently working unusually late a little too often? If you’re qualified and authorized to do so, offer to help with their work. Make sure it’s okay with any supervisors so that you don’t overstep any boundaries and handle information you shouldn’t be seeing.

Helping around the office doesn’t just have to concern work-related tasks. You can offer to set up for meetings or pick up your coworker’s Grubhub order on the way back from picking up yours. Personal gestures large or small can make all the difference.
